Grain bin collapses and explodes - video
-
Back in the mid 1970's here in Davenport, Iowa the Robin Hood Flour mill exploded right next to the Mississippi River. People were killed, and a Fire Department Lieutenant and a Special Forces Vietnam Vet (friend of mine) who worked there were lowered into the site by national guard helicopter to search for survivors.

I remember the event. Grain dust does explode, and it takes little spark to ignite it. Modern elevators, flour storage, and other Ag handling methods were mandated by the (!) feds. Elevator explosions have declined as have other Ag injuries.

Amazingly steady shooting from a cell phone! Interesting how quickly the flames went out and no one appeared to be hurt thank goodness. I thought for sure there would be popcorn everywhere. Kind of interesting also the way the cylinder buckled the way it did and the time it took to finally collapse...something must have applied lateral pressure to the top, perhaps the boom that broke loose? Saw a lot of those corn silo's as a kid in Illinois but never heard of or saw one that went off.

I think they got lucky! After the "explosion" much of the structure remains. Some of the bigger grain explosions have torn whole elevators apart causing death and lots of destruction.
