I worked with a guy who decided that it would be a good idea to chuck a 1/8" bit in a Dremel. The motor was set on max speed and when he plugged it in the inertia twisted the aluminum chuck in two, throwing the drill bit. It hit him dead center in an eyeglass lens and poked a hole through it but it stopped the bit. If he hadn't had coke bottle lens prescription glasses he would have lost an eye.

Betcha he won't take the guard off a grinder again.

Why do people insist on removing the guards off angle grinders, I see guard less angle grinders in use on internet videos, web site photos, gifs, etc and on main stream TV shows. I use angle grinders in my job as a fabricator each day, they can be an extremely useful tool or they can inflict serious injury to you and those nearby.
I have had other tradesman tell me they don’t like guards because they get in the way, I call bullsh#t on that and will not allow an unguarded machine to be used in a workplace I am employed at or in my workshop at home. They are a “line of site” tool, so your eyes are in the direct firing line, over the years I have had grinding wheels let go and seen it happen to others, sometimes it is caused by carelessness sometimes not. These machines have an element of inherent danger built in and need to be treated accordingly.

If the guard is in the way go get the damn die grinder.

Not only they remove the guard, but they also keep their faces in line with the lethal disc.

My wife and I were both taught when young:

Do not stand in line with any grinding or wire wheel when spinning up;

Do not grind on th sides that aren't designed for it;

Never stand in front of high pressure gauges when turning on (like welding).

With all that and guards on machines, she still lost a finger tip at work but they were able to reconstruct it fairly well.

Happened to me.
Also had a cheek cut.
Glasses were of a safety design of some sort.
Did a nice scratch in my glasses but fortunately I had bought from Cosco three weeks prior and they replaced them at no cost under a policy of some sort.
