I tried grinding optical glass once. There were cameras inside a heavy walled chamber and they had to see out. I ground it on a regular combo belt and disc grinder. It worked, however I do not recommend it.

There is no surface grinding going on, here. The lens is being edged/sized/shaped to fit a spectacle frame.

When I was younger, I ground a piece of regular glass into a round shape on a bench grinder to make a turkey call. No joke. It was an experiment, more than anything. It worked - and it's possible to do - but you have to take it very slowly and carefully. It's a tedious process.
