It works, "arbor press" doesn't require rack and pinion, and commercially they're available in many ranges of pressure. It's all about multiplying leverage, so a linkage qualifies.
There's a joke somewhere that top end of arbor press rams mushroom when some joker eeks out a bit more by wailing away injudiciously with a steel hammer. He's same guy who's never fixed that or paid for a new one.
