    Hacksaw arm extension

I thought that I might as well utilise some of the machine hacksaw blades I have (all gifted, although I have no machine). When filing out a lot of material, I first drill out much of the waste, then hacksaw conventionally, and then I like to widen the cuts, before starting with a file, and for me, I would rather have an 18 inch blade than a 12” or 10”, because then, there are fewer strokes.

A bit of crude ornamentation was needed to disguise the fact that the arm was a jagged edge offcut.

I visited a blacksmith I know in the Autumn, to give him some of my surplus hammers, etc, to sell on to his students. He was out on site, so while I was waiting, I thought I might as well put handles on a couple of them. But then, wanting to cut protruding wedges, I said to his assistant that I couldn’t find a hacksaw anywhere. “We don’t have them,” he replied.
    I was astonished!
