Instead of a competition for the thinnest hand plane shavings, it would be for the thickest.

Thanks for this post Jon!! Had no idea this kind of thing takes place, but leave it to the Japanese to display this kind of master craftsmanship as a competition to achieve a 3 tenths swarf. A master bladesmith must have sharpened the blades to achieve these kind of numbers, let alone the blade adjustment!!! Awed once again...~PJ

Must be a tough competition! That is an awesome display, yet no one in the audience seems to be impressed.

What timber is it? I've never seen anything like the straight even grain of that timber

If this were held anywhere else, I would worry that it was a scam, with paper rolled up inside the plane being pulled out. But this is impressive. Where did they find such an awesome log of wood to be planned? Amazing.

This can only happen on a dead flat surface. Very impressive in the first place. Then the peeling off of the few tenths thick "paper" equally impressive.
