I'm thinking old mini grease gun as a base? I can think of so many occasions something like that would be of use.

Maybe a linear drive won't be very strong but a thought,or some kind of jackscrew mechanism it seems it just wedges the claw apart

I could use something like that for lifting electric motors for shimming while doing alignments
