Way back when I was starving in college some guy had me refinish his big rosewood executive desk.
If I remember right, he had left a spilled alcohol-based rink on it over a weekend and it stained it badly.
I had just learned about cabinet scrapers so I sharpened one up, put a good burr on it and set to work.
It took the old finish off beautifully.
I began to work on the stained area, and . . . OOPS! I scraped through the veneer!
After much fretting, I painted in the grain and then finished over it all.
He was none the wiser, but I was much wiser!
Another time, I was at a client's multi-million dollar home doing a portrait design consultation trying to figure out the size and placement of a full-length portrait she wanted.
I had taken various sizes of kraft paper to tape on the walls to show size and determine placement.
As I was taking one off of a wall, her 8-year daughter bounced into the room and in an "I can do THAT!" attitude, ripped a piece of the tape off the wall - removing the ultra-expensive faux-painted finish with it!
I had to go back and spend a morning painting and blending the area meticulously.
The hardest part of it was blending the sheen of the new area with the old - looking at it from varying angles and with the lights on and off to get the 'glow' just right.
Sigh . . . what a nuisance.

I have a few pieces of leftover laminate flooring and have replaced a damaged section about the same size. It was a little tricky getting the new section to click in but there was no extensive matching, just an accurate cut and a little "tongue out the side of my mouth" precision work.
