In my younger years I used to notice old furniture and cabinet makers practiced several methods to prevent splitting. some would rub a finishing nail to the side of their nose to coat it with the natural oils produced there. Some would roll screws and nails in a bar of soap. Almost all would say there are times when a pilot hole is an absolute must then coat the nail or screw in glue. But I never heard one say flick your bic lighter to prevent splitting maybe it works and maybe it is just an internet hack.
Never try to tell me it can't be done
When I have to paint I use KBS products
