You make an excellent point about the old rack and gear style jumping the rack. It can be a pain getting it meshed back into the correct tooth. The old Mitutoyo used to be supplied with a thin shim tool to aid in getting it re-set.

I think you will like using the height gage with the digital caliper.
Prior to making mine I would use the digital caliper to double check my vernier caliper!
Now I just calibrate the digital and mark up the parts.
