That Russian Kamov with contra rotating rotors does not need the tail fins for yaw control, so don't understand why he just did not land it again on land. Luckily the tail appendage was still hanging off the end thus keeping the C of G within limits.

Maybe the pilot was unaware that the empennage was broken. The rudders don't do much at low speed, but I assume that a pilot would still expect to feel them, in which case the entire empennage dangling from the boom would probably feel quite different. If the rudder controls are hard-linked to the rotor control I suppose that the dangling tail might have made pointing it (more) difficult. It seemed to wobble a bit after the tail exited the chat.

Agree Sossol, the tail rudder fins assist yaw control and stability at higher speeds and are connected via cables, which would indeed make the rudder pedals feel tight and needing more force to operate.
Agree Frank, his approach was fast and low and so had to flare much more severely to arrest his speed and forgot his tail. Note too that the tail fins are hit twice by the main rotor, possibly causing some blade damage and increasing vibrations in the machine.
