Did the cable snap? My dad was on the Intrepid in WWII. He saw a guy literally cut in half by a cable that broke. (You'll notice there's no one on the flight deck in the video.) He said the most common problem was the tail hook missing the cable alltogether, the plane going off the end of the ship and hitting the water. ISTR he said that when that happened, the odds of getting rescued were pretty low.
