    Hold-all tongs

Hold-all tongs, designed by Jim Cooper, master Blacksmith, Raven Forge.
I saw a picture of a pair of tongs in the journal of the British Artist Blacksmiths’ Association. I liked them very much, and set about making a pair.

The designer evidently took a couple of pieces of 20mm angle iron and welded them to the jaws of a tongs forged for the purpose. The jaws are longer than usual. The angle iron pieces interlock.

The jaws accommodate a range of sizes. If larger stock is selected, the reins have to be squeezed, at red heat, to accommodate it. While this is fairly routine, do it too often and the tongs weaken. It took a while to set the jaws and I am still not entirely happy with their orientation.

If you intend to make any, it would be proper to credit the designer. These are for my own use.
