Holdfast from cheap clawhammer

Would any of you care to approve this workholding method?

The guys downstairs kept a couple of cheap hammers, and when I grabbed one, the grip came off. Not only that, but the head was slack on the shaft.

Without asking, I scrapped it! I took it home and annealed it, after cutting off the tube. Then I drilled a 1/2” hole through. It was a bit tricky to keep it in place on the bench drill. The bar you see is normally used as a stop against the vice.

I expect I shall give them a better hammer next week.

A good use for something that would have probably been thrown away. Why did you anneal it?
