Homemade brass fids - photo
-
Nice but what is a fid for?
-
I believe that it is used to stiches rope together.
-
A fid is like a marlin spike only it has a hollowed out side to enable easier passing of a rope strand through the other twisted strands when making splices or eye splices once you get used to using one you will wonder how on earth you ever back splices a rope without one.

Thanks for the video that really explains what a fib does. I didn't realize the knobs on the ends of the brass fibs were removable in order to insert the rope.
I wonder what the tensile strength of the loop is?
-
A properly made loop end can have up to 98% of the tensile strength of the line in which it's made.
-
Did the video illustrate a "properly made loop?" it certainly looked good. I wonder about getting a metal reinforcement, I used to know the name, inside the loop?
