We do surface mount, but who needs their own pick and place? Must be a very busy small shop, I've known places that turn out quite a bit with just a few people doing it by hand.

It's easy to think only of computerized machinery when it comes to pick-and-place. Among the first P'n'P machines was the automatic pin setter. The same concept was used in the citrus packing industry when Sunkist built the first automatic patternpackers. What used to be done by hand was done by machine; a huge(!) cost-saving, and labor eliminator.
Citrus packing is interesting to the student of close-packing, which is fundamental to understanding crystals and inorganic chemistry. It makes me wonder how close packing is considered when deciding the paths of these new-fangled ;] pick-and-place machines.
