How long do these compressors last without the circulating oil? Seems it would limit their life.

I've seen them last for quite a while. A refrigerant compressor will pump air when it is nearly useless for pumping refrigerant. I had a friend that used this kind of setup for years. Not as a continuous compressor, but as a intermittent use compressor.

If/when using a refrigerant compressor I would be concerned about oil getting into the compressed air. Maybe install an oil filter between the compressor and the tank?
