More likely a horse owner slapped him upside the head.

The absolute 1st thing you do is clean the hoof. If you go yanking shoes off without first examining the sole for injuries or damage you may very well get launched across the barn, not to mention making a tender footed horse leery of Farriers.

Also no need to be carving the soft sole of the foot with the hoof knife. If it doesn't brush off with a stiff cleaning brush then that is usable, and often tender tissue you are hacking away at. We've seen too many expensive show horses lamed from over exuberant "shaping" of the sole. It's soft, let it wear away on it's own.
