Apparently using draft horses to power machinery was somewhat common in the 1800s, and this practice is still in use today by some Amish people. We've looked at this concept before, using a now-extinct Turnspit breed of dog. 1893 advertisement from Farm Journal:

Not to re-ignite the forgoing blaze, but draft horses consume a lot of feed. Burning that up in a walker may not be as justifiable as producing work saving horsepower. And reinforces my initial post, #2 .
