Common sight on the cattle ranch I grew up on. A well-trained horse does a lot of things for the rider.
Something that must be trained or is there a natural protective instinct developed between horse and owner

Donkeys, burros, mules all will take on and kill coyotes, one of our mules grabbed a mountain lion by the neck, snapped its neck, tossed the cat in the air, when it hit the ground that big Jack landed on it with all four feet. Lion never knew what hit him.
