This '49 Mercury was built by JeremyJames on JalopyJournal.
JalopyJournal.com is a traditional hot rodding forum, as opposed to, say, a street rodding forum like NSRA.org.uk, and this build is what it means to build a traditional custom.
The build began when the Merc was received in trade for a T bucket. The builder traded out the engine for a 331 Caddy plus 3-speed Lasalle trans.
After a thorough undercoating, the body went out for some serious chopping. Many of the pics in the thread are up-close shots of chop work, while numerous traditionalists ooh and aah over the details.
If you want to understand traditional custom building, this build thread is where you go. Much of traditionalism is a culture of what isn't done to the car. Plus lots of up-close shots of body lines, hand-finished metal, and decades-old OEM parts being unboxed for the first time. Even the pics are mostly in black and white.
As another member described the build: "there's not one single thing you've done that would have disappointed a truly hardcore traditionalist."
