    What most likely happened was someone decided an elevator should be installed but the stairs were already cast to have enough room to accommodate the shaft way the stairs had to be cut back.

    Writing a quote to my own post.
    I've personally had to have this done a few times over in Kuwait. Once I made a contractor cut an entire support wall out and relocate it half a meter so I could install a cargo lift to lower exotic cars to the basement of a 5-story house being built. He had only left 2.2meters of width. I mean get real would you attempt to drive a Bugatti mistral that is 2.161 meters wide through a 2.2-meter opening?

    There are a lot of companies who do nothing else but cut concrete. In floors, walls, ceilings and yes stairways. Most that I have done business with though will usually have the guards on the blades with water spraying on them. Blades are not cheap and water helps them to last 10 times longer.
