There is a book from 1938 called Scouting For Rural Boys that has drawings of a rope making machine. There are probably older versions of the drawings. I remember making this device as a kid in the 60's and making rope at summer camp. We just used wood. Of course we didn't have three old cordless drills laying about.

We used to do this as a Cub Scout project when we were hosting Cubs during Webelos Woods. I think the troop had 6 or 8 machines, all in wood. We used baling twine recycled from big bales the dairy used.

This guy is missing the important tool, the Rope Wrench. Without the wrench, the quality is what this video shows.
