I like the hydraulic jack idea. for gaining extra clearance when needed once elevated always use the lynch pins to rest the load on never rely on the hydraulics of a jack.
While I prefer to position jack stands as far apart as possible for stability concerns,there are times when positioning them closer together is necessary.
Never try to tell me it can't be done
