The first engine that I designed and built I called the FF -> Foale's Folly. I had not thought of reviving it until now. I shall put it on the short list for sure.
It was an unusual engine in that it was a two stroke with both inlet and exhaust controlled by rotary valves. At that period, rotary inlets existed but there were no rotary exhausts. Those who were my elders and betters at the time advised that it would not work. I am always happy to make fun of myself and in deference to my advisors I used the name FF. It worked in exactly the way that I had expected. Even though I was 15 or 16 at the time I worked at a university whilst studying and I had access to computers, such as they were in 1959, once I had my first calculus lesson I was able to simulate, in a global simplistic way, the workings of the engine.
