I think it stops them freezing, as they would if they were left above the water - on the ice, where the fishermen are.

Haven't ice-fished; think I just figured out why....... and well, lakes that freeze that hard are 500 miles away.

Once every few decades we will have a cold snap that lasts long enough to freeze the local lakes over. On one such event kids were out driving around in one of the harbors on their dirt bikes towing other kids on make-shift sleds. The local city council decided this could lead to several accidents from vehicles sliding into one another on the ice or possibly damage a few of the yachts moored there and frozen in. Their solution in interest of safety was to have a small 6 cubic yard's ish. dump truck to drive around and distribute sand on top of the ice. The kids seemed to know where the ice was not thick enough to drive and avoided those areas but the council wanted them to play further away from the boats, so the sand truck driver backs his truck way out on the ice and barely has time to get out of the window before the truck sinks in 30 feet of water. One of the kids see the truck sink rides near the hole and tosses the rope and sled to the driver to grab onto thereby saving his life.
I can't help but wonder what were the council members thinking sending a truck out on a lake in Texas
Never try to tell me it can't be done

Whole point; weren't thinking. Probably relations of bbb-b-brain trust believing wind powered generators were just the ticket.

So it keeps the cans from getting colder than 32F, until you remove them, then all I can see is their lips freezing to the cans!
