The Dremel drill press is a marvel of steel and plastic. The cost is low and it does many tasks just fine. However, if you are trying to drill tiny diameter holes, it has a problem. The side to side play in the Dremel tool holder is enough to snap the drill off. This article offers a solution.

Looks like a significant improvement.
Do you think using a 1/4" or 3/8" thick plate would make any difference (but now requiring boring on lathe or milling machine that many readers may have as compared to an inexpensive step drill)?

I did start by considering 1/2" thick plate but it really is overkill. The force generated by rotation is parallel to the face of the plate which is extremely strong. I think 16 gage sheet stock would probably have worked.
