Centrifugal force!. Normal practices is not to let the work extend more than 5 times the work piece diameter. But should the need becomes desperate to exceed the limit, a heavy duty steady rest can be fabricated to enclose the work and secured to anchor points in the ground. Start with low speed, once satisfied, shift to higher speeds.
