That floor sill joint shows the ingenuity, creativity, and respect for the natural resource the Japanese culture embraces. It also, like so many other Japanese wood joints, points to an amazing effort to not throw away smaller pieces of wood. They endeavor to include a perceived useless piece of scrap in a way that is completely necessary as locking wedges. Carpentry is just another quasi religious practice in the Japanese culture. I am almost never unimpressed when exploring Japanese hand crafts, but Japanese wood craft is mesmerizing to me. Thanks for posting!
