I'm a 78 yr. old Gunsmith who has been working on guns since 1946 when I was 5 yrs. old. My Father, who was Machinist building diesel engines for submarines, set me down at our cellar table and handed me a spring steel scraper and a 5' long wooden stock that was taller than i was. It was from a late 1700's Flintlock Indian Trading Rifle complete with a mirror held in place on the right side of the butt stock by brass carpet tacks. He instructed me to scrape all the red barn paint off that covered it. He had already removed the 'Iron works' which also was painted with red lead barn paint. My Mother 'squeeked' when she saw me sitting in that chair all covered in red paint flakes and having a ball. Man, I was in at 5 yrs. old! I was really working with my Dad and it infected me so that ! Have been restoring firearms ever since.
