    Just an oldie passing by

I have been into model engineering for over 50 years now, and was very active at one time under the name of Bogstandard. Having designed and made many unique types of tooling to help myself and others in their quest to make things out of metal, plus I also explained to people in layman's terms how to carry out those 'I could never do that' type of jobs.
Unfortunately, nearly five years ago my life was turned upside down due to the loss of my wife and physical disabilities that I had suffered with since my early 20's getting much worse.

I, hopefully, am now on the road to recovery with a new partner and a renewed interest in engineering. Just have to make a few more changes to my machinery to allow me to operate them and I should soon be up and running.

Great to hear from you again, John. I miss your model making wisdom. Wish we could entice you over to the Model Engine Maker forum.

Congrats on the new lease on life and a kindred spirit with whom to share it.

Many thanks Marv, it is nice to know that you are missed by some people.

As you know, I actually started MEM, and after a few months, warned admin about the way the site was going, and I was proved correct, and I just don't think it is now the sort of site that I want to belong to, too many holier than thous.

I still post on HMEM though, but until my memory returns enough after treatment for PTSD, I can't do much, except use my large archive to show people how I did things. That is really helping my memories return, so hopefully in the future, I will be able to get up to my old ways.

    Thanks again Marv

Hi John - welcome to HomemadeTools.net

"Bogstandard" sounds familiar to me, I think I've seen your swing-up external threading tool build. Nice to have you join us.

Thank you Jon for the nice welcome.

I have a lot of trouble at this time remembering all about the things I have made in the past, but when someone reminds me about something, like you have, I go through my archives and learn all about it again. I have got back about 20% of my memories over the last year, but need to get back in my shop full time to relearn all my techniques again. As I pick up another tool or play about with the machinery, memories that I thought I had lost come flooding back. Pretty soon I think it will be safe for me to get back around my machine tools and be able to operate them with confidence.
It really is a weird sensation, just like deja vu.

    Hi John,
I know exactly what you mean about the Model Engineering mag, if i remember correctly i stopped subscribing as they were forever changing the online magazine format. I used to like the PDF version then they switched to an online flash player version, its a royal pain in the.... when you work away and don't get very good internet access.
Its good to hear you are on the mend and that life's on the up again, I look forward to seeing some of your tooling and ideas.
Its good to see another UK budding Engineer, I'm up in Brampton near Carlisle.

    all the best
    Jason
