I applaud his thinking ability, and his explanation. He didn't need to do all that.
On a straight reference edge draw a line the length of the square leg. Rotate the square over to the opposite side keeping the same leg on the table, but the opposite side. If the line you drew is the same against the square leg you are square, If it is not, you need to follow the tap procedure he describes.
