Looks like they've sliced into the end grain to allow the layers to slide as they bend.

Even with the laminate cuts, they couldn't bend it so easily without steaming it for several hours first to make the layers more flexible. Here's a video of the process...

I wouldn’t be putting any part of my body, let alone my head, in line with the cable like the bloke at the bottom of the screen. Could get nasty really quick if something lets go.

I agree. I've seen really bad things happen in the 4x4 Off-Road World with Winch Cables breaking. Then can go straight through your windscreen and do nasty things to your head.

You guys gotta watch the 1:22 source video for the GIF that IAMSatisfied found in the post above. It's a real gem of eco building insanity; almost comes across like a parody. They call it "a green object towards eco timber architecture". I love log construction, and I get the utility of being able to bend logs, but they're using them to build this really tacky, eco-gaudy tent or pavilion abomination.

But then the winch belt is put across the slices to hinder it! I wonder how far those slices go?

That's for sure. It's a bent lamination but they missing the outer band strap I usually use steel as it seems to behave well enough. It's used to keep the outer layer in compression. I see quite a few voids in the lamination near the top of the bend.
