Lathe Carriage Stop

After finishing the extended point live center and parting tool holder for my small lathe that I’ve been working on for the past several weeks I figured I would make the final attachment for this little beast by making a carriage stop, the machine came with a threading dial, follower rest, steady rest and change gears for threading but no carriage stop and there is no availability for one, I have had the need for this attachment several times in the past but always seamed to work around it, I don’t use this little machine to often but it’s nice to have everything you need when you’re doing a job.

After doing a little measuring I came up with a design that I thought would suite the purpose, the body and clamp plate were made from 4140 annealed steel while the adjustable stop screw, thumb screw and clamping screw were made from 12L14 and the graduated dial from 6061 aluminum, this attachment has a ground finish for now but I’ll probably oil blacken it later on for rust purposes, this tool works and functions as intended and looks nice on the machine.

Nice job as always. Great looking final product. Also one of my next projects, but I will make body from teflon. Already cut block 100 x 65 x 35 mm out of big round bar.

Nice job, Doug! I'm sure that little attachment will like living on your lathe. I do some short production work and that would come in handy for some jobs.

The main reason I made it was for boring up to a shoulder, but it will come in nice for a production run as well

Hi Doug,
I actually have a 20" DRO mounted on the backside of my 7 x 16 Micromark mini lathe. That takes care of most of my depth needs, but it still would be nice to have a depth stop for those longer run jobs that become mundane. That is when I tend to get careless and accidents can happen. A positive stop is good insurance.

DROs are fine and I often wish I had them but an accurate bed stop will let you concentrate on what is going on without having one eye on a counting down readout, I may yet fit one to my crosslide as that will be all I need to eliminate the backlash from readings.

I try and use all the tools I make, some are for just show but the majority of them are used often, sometimes I'll create a project just to use the tools I make.

I, personally would feel lost without a DRO on the Z axis. That is the most important axis for me. I can zero the display at any point with a push of a button and easily watch the display for machining to an exact dimension. I have been using Trav-A-Dials and DRO's for almost fifty years and it is second nature for me and is very precise. Just my opinion of course.

This little machine is 11 years old, bought it new and I couldn't believe it didn't come with a carriage stop, my 6913 Clausing Lathe came with a carriage stop, and I also put DRO on it years ago, DRO's are a cats meow, I just couldn't justify the spending for a DRO on this seldom used machine.

Okay you have convinced me I need DROs, I have used a Hidehain 4 station Dro for years at work but in my eight decade I have procrastinated about whether it is
worth fitting my own. Having now decided I am worth it can you suggest a decent system for a 9 inch bench lathe that is preferably mains powered.
BTW been meaning to ask how you achieve those nicely uniform chamfers on your tools.

Do a search on EBay for "Shars Digital Readout". It is just a low priced Shars DRO, but I have had it for over 6 years with no major troubles. The only issue was with fine cast iron dust on the scale and cleaning solved the problem. The one I bought was 24" long and has a scale that can be cut to length. It is fairly easy to install onto the backside of the bed. I installed mine under a piece of aluminum angle to protect it from swarf.

I have added a link to the DRO on EBay.

As for the chamfers on my tools; I mill them using a carbide single lip chamfering cutter of my own making. The chamfers are all the same size for a uniform look. Most of my tools are made from 4140 P.H. steel which finishes nicely using carbide.

I have a sheet metal shear with a .001" reading vernier on it which has served me for 20+ years, but this could just be bolted right on top and no more hunkering down trying to read that last .001".

I also have a paper cutter with a 12" vernier on it - again, no more squinting and leaning in, further in, adjusting the bifocals...

Here's the DRO setup on my milling machine that I got from igaging, you can buy these individually and the scales can be cut to whatever length, the maximum length scale is 36", you can get these different lengths ready to go but they are still trimmable, 12"-18"-24"-36"

Yes Dick and they are very visible too, their not to pricy if you buy a set of three, I get a lot of things from E-Bay, here is a link to the DRO's

Hi Doug, those displays is what I would choose, unfortunately I so far cant find a UK supplier and the shipping form across the pond is more than the product, so it looks like I will go for the setup that Dick has. Thanks anyway for the info.

Super nice piece, Doug! Have to make one of these for my Grizzly 9 x 20.
Biggest question is, where did the dividing head come from?
