    The traditional tool for that purpose is called a "Spider." Looks very much like yours, though usually, it has 4 screws at 90 degrees, as that lets you adjust pairs of screws to help center your part, similar to a 4-jaw chuck. Spiders were probably the inspiration for the development of chucks. For really long stock, you could also have a stand with something similar to the spider mounted on it parked farther from the lathe to keep the stock from whipping around and hurting people or equipment. Woodworkers do something similar to that using rollers on a stand.
