Good idea, but if you change tube sizes, the height would have to be adjusted. If the set screws were mounted on the front, the tube would remain the correct height even if tube size changed.

Not rigid enough and why weld while mounted on lathe? At least cover the ways. If you can afford the extra inch or two of material, cut through middle of pipe rather than just one side.
