Surely it would be better to use the lathe to make some rollers and a dedicated tumbler?

Yup I'm right there with you on that one. Keep that abrasive dust away from my ways.

Looking at the picture I see a sealed container with the lid screwed to a plywood disc. Probably another plywood disc glued onto the rear in order to grab it with the chuck. What is the issue?
