    That is just the coolest thing. I didn't know they existed.

    I did this job a few years ago. We ripped apart two of these things in the air, beefed them up structurally, then installed all new electronics, the put them back together. To give you an idea of scale, that machine took 4 tons of welding rod.

    Is that coal in the stockpile behind that machine? That pile kept getting larger and larger, then disappeared, a few times during during the rebuilding process.

    Yup. That would be coal. It's really interesting because that's not a mine, it's a coal depot. Before that project I had always assumed these machines only worked in open pit mines. All different types of coal arrives on trains, then the stacker-reclaimers make a big pile. The some time later a ship arrives, the stacker-reclaimers reclaim the pile and load it onto ships. Kinda interesting.
