    Their attempt to put it out was much quicker than I would have expected.....as useless as it was.

    Depending on the chemistry, these lithium batterys are usually left to burn themselves out because the three things needed for combustion, fuel, oxygen, and heat are all there. The best you can do is try to keep other stuff around it from catching fire...

    F500 fire extinguisher for lithium batteries.

    Our FD used the F500 chemical in their brush truck last year to put out 36,000 pounds of lithium batteries being carried on a semi that collided head on with a semi loaded with 30,000 pounds of raw lumber.
    This stuff works.

    The demo they gave us (I am a volunteer) they lit a block of magnesium, let it burn for a minute, hit it with the F500 extinguisher, it went out immediately and then the demonstrator picked the block up with his bare hands, it was already cool.

    and then this one - a highlight video of multiple types of fires, including magnesium:

    I wonder if they have tried it on thermite...

    The SDS does not indicate any cancer causing agents. It is a skin/eye/respiratory irritant. A post I read said not cancer causing.

    It contains
    40-50% :: Fatty alkyl ethers reaction products with aliphatic acids
    5-8: :: Alcohols C6-12
    2-4% :: 2,2’,2”-Nitrilotrisethanol aliphatic acid soap
