Coming in through the Hatteras Inlet wasn't quite that bad with the tide coming in it was very interesting in a 40' head boat with 10' swells. I'm sure he knew what he was doing but the captain kept the speed of the boat just slower than the breakers which nearly came over the stern. That and the shifting shoals make it interesting from week to week. They say it's why there were so many shipwrecks off Cape Hatteras. Ships would sail through with no issues then come back through a month later on the exact route, run aground and sink.
Every once in awhile the tides bring in the skeletal remains of an old ship.
