Straightening an existing trench that was dug by the high hoe in the back ground. Talking about hard work! My guess is they are doing a direct in earth pour of a foundation. Here a rough sided foundation gives purchase to ground frost and you get building lift and fall, and cracked foundations. I learned the hard way working with my Dad 50 years ago as a little boy when we poured a set of piers in Manitoba without a cardboard tube lining them for a smooth finish for our front steps. The pier was lifting up and down every winter and summer. Frost in Manitoba can go as deep as 8 feet. He was young too, early 30's and experience taught him smooth is the way to go.
