Unless they were doing this for video click bait demonstration, an experienced operator would have brought the magnet in contact with the stack of sheet metal before energizing the magnet, the way most operators do at all of the scrap yards I've ever visited. The only time they will air gap energize is when they are trying to pull a specific piecs of metal out of a bundle or pile.

It is amazing to me the kind of perfectly good materials that are scrapped.

I enjoyed watching the magnet crane work at the auto salvage yard where I worked when young.

I have offered to pay for materials I have seen discarded at the scrap yard. ---"we cannot sell anything due to insurance"--- "Ok, heres 20 bucks turn your back while I put in in my truck"--- "Nope"

    Frustrating

"Due to insurance" is their way of saying they can't be bothered, insurance has nothing to do with it.

Where I used to have a shop there was a large metals recycler straight across the street they chopped everything up stood containers on end and filled them then sent them overseas. Their policy was nothing sold to the public. They didn't care if you drove in there in a semi and scrap trailer and offered them double what they got after processing and shipping. I had an in with them though since I did a fair number of repairs on their equipment instead of them paying me with a check or cash they paid me with weight 2 tons of steel per hour. Neither of us kept track of how much steel came out of their yard and sometimes the manager would send a loader across to me with the excuse that it needed some work the bucket was always full when it arrived and empty when it left. He didn't care if all I did was replace a head light, his philosophy was screw corporate if they were so intent on losing money not selling to the public, I was doing them a huge favor keeping their equipment running and wasn't really charging them all that much, so he felt could help them along once in a while, All these years later I am still using some of the steel he traded to me.
