So, if it started with about 5 gallons of chemicals, which would have been about 40 pounds. Does it still weigh the same once expanded?

Yes, weight would stay the same. But once they trim off the top/sides, and then slice it for sheets, each sheet would be a fraction of the original total weight.

Looks like a giant cheese factory to me.
