Gibs are important. Grandfathers, or at least generous hosts; unreplaceable.
I believe 'Odessia' [sp?] has rare gift of a mechanically inquisitive mind. Watch her examine that torch! Young lady, that's what it's all about; top, underside, form, fit, and function.
That video opening is more watchable than 100's of the usual tripe.
And the gib itself, I only half dread the few I need to make. That old left hand/ right hand configuration is a devil in some parts, no?
Note to folks disparaging shapers; ever try milling a gib?
It is often stated that you can make just about anything on a shaper but money, but when those high profit margin machines get worn and require replacement parts the shaper becomes the go to machine for making the replacement parts for some reason. so in a sense if they didn't have a shaper they wouldn't be making money
responding to Frank S, *4, and onlookers. We have the job shop not production facility mind-frame.
Shapers and people who appreciate them, don't party with types who can't get their heads around "simple, reliable, low cost'.
The idea of lower stress material removal, the difference of single pointing vs turning cutters is key. They're ignoring how most metals originate, being rolled, makes grain lengthwise. The other is cutter form, try milling press brake dies. Fast is not always better.
Hence forward, I decree phrase "can make anything but money" cancelled. No, won't make more money; there's a chance to get some money back.
Many see vertical bandsaws same way, in both perspectives; ideal or superfluous.
