Probably good for low accuracy stuff like wood. I have a set of long punches of a few dozen different diameters that I could put in there for a much more precise mark. If you get the right diameter punch that's very tight on the hole you can usually get within 10 thou. Good for machining. Maybe not necessary for building a house.
