Measuring the taper of a tapered bore is at best a tricky operation for the amateur metalworker. One way to do it is to use two tooling balls of differing diameter. By measuring the depth of each ball in the bore, one can then calculate the angle of the bore.
The attached diagram shows the setup and the associated mathematics.
