Your work provided an idea for me. I have several toolmaker vises that I could use as micrometer stands but the vertical jaws would make it difficult to read the thimble position. I have an idea to make a simpler wooden wedge attached to the base of the larger toolmaker vise to provide the proper viewing angle for the micrometer. I will have to add two right angel plastic jaw protectors to prevent scratching the micrometers. Thanks for the inspiration.

Beautiful work. It looks exactly like a mike stand made by an accomplished machinist should look.

I made slip-on leather lined vise jaws for my Panavise and used that as a mike stand for years until someone gifted me this clever Fowler design...



As you tighten the clamp on the mike frame the pressure spreads the holder and tightens it into its receptacle in the frame to lock in the viewing angle you desire.

Thanks for the tip, Marv! One single screw for tilting & fixing the tool - as simple as ingenious!
Also, the holder arm's flanged recess requires the mike holding cylinder to be pressed down when assembling,
and the cut-out's springiness preventing it from falling out.

Perhaps a project for one of the rainy days?
