Rick I like the idea of welding the socket on the arbor pinion shaft Looks almost like an old S&K socket LOL.
I would consider doing the same on my arbor press but in my case I would have to use a 1" ratchet Pretty sure my 26" long Proto 1" ratchet would be strong enough I just don't feel like I have a sacrificial socket at this time
welding a 3/4 dr socket on it gives u a longer handle and more control over presure, Horror Freight has 3/4 dr ratchets f 20-30$ all the time..another way to do this i have read about is to machine/grind a cut in the square rack next to the last tooth so the round pinon gear does not touch the rack and u can move/rotate handle to where u want and then raise up square to reengage the gears,..i have worked in one shop , we had a large arbor press and it had a rotating round handle like a old style steering wheel off a ship,it has very handy, always had at least one of the 8 handles where u needed it..problem was some people ,not haveing enough preasure to pressing what ever, would raise handle and then give it a fling so it would some flying down to press in the work and eventually would break off a tooth on the arbor gear..
So you cant raise the arbor without reversing the ratchet? Bit of a nuisance during repetitive operations
Thanks Rick. I like your idea and a 1/2" ratchet would be fine based on your press size I think. I have an old craftsman 1/2" flex head that I've used to get axle nuts off VW's in a pinch with a cheater pipe. Mainly that you can release and put the handle anywhere is the best feature. I've never had to repeatedly press more than a dozen things so it Works for me. Great Idea!

Good idea. Any mods should be ones that meet yer needs.
This is a really great mod. Simple, yet very clever!
