My youngest daughter just turned sixteen - me having grown up in a tee-totalling household, I've tried to raise the kids with the far more normal idea that alcohol is just another part of food, for older people. But - she loves to make colonial era foods and clothes, and recently came up with a great recipe for actual ginger beer or "ale".
It just cooks on the stove (fresh-grated ginger and molasses and sugar and some other stuff); sits out overnight, then gets bottled into liter bottles in the fridge. After a week or so, it's carbonated and ready. Son, Chemical Engineering student, determined alcohol content was right at five percent.
So - our joke is that the youngest can only drink alcohol she makes herself! She just made a batch to take for Christmas gifts to older cousins and aunts - was a big hit.
The ginger beer is really good, especially if you're a fan of real gingerbread and gingersnaps.
A new one in the Women Drinking genre, and an internet star is born. Her Instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/brieanamacdonald/
