( MOM ) MILK OF MAGNESIA
Hello, I was working on putting a new exhaust gasket in my 56, TO35 Massey this weekend and as I was taking the exhaust bolts loose and I thought,
(I Dipped These Bolts I MOM 24 Years Ago When I Put The First New Gasket In)
And they came out like the day they where put in, cracked them loose and screwed out with my fingers..
the threads looked clean and fresh,,,
I guess its second nature that I use MOM for an anti seize and have never thought much about it.
I remember Dad using it all the time on the farm, he was a B52 mechanic for years and that was all he used for engine assembly.
The Navy used only MOM for high heat assemblies on the jet engines because the heat would cause a chemical reaction and with time only get better to break down the MOM and leave only the magnesium to coat the threads.
So, this is just to let you know that it does work and have used it for years on almost everything I assemble, especially high heat areas. Exhausts-Heads-Manifolds... Just dip and assemble
Hope this helps someone in the future.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for that post.Being a person who has tried so many expensive that products don't work as expected I am intrigued.
I tried oil of wintergreen some time back and was amazed at its penetrating powers. I found that info from the net, that the (US) navy used it to unseize threads in submarines.
Could you possibly offer a bit more detail for those of us who have never seen MOM and the specifics of its application.
does one buy it as a liquid or is it a powder that water is added to.
many thanks

Sometimes stainless steel nuts and bolts gall from poor tolerances during manufacture. our industrial construction foremen would pour MOM into a box of nuts to get past the galling.

Learned something new today! Fantastic! As one who tries homemade substitutes, this post is really good. Just a couple of weeks ago, I discovered (read) that nail polish is a decent substitute for Loctite Blue.

Hmmm .. Ive been buying expensive Anti-seize this whole time. Any bolts that screw directly into aluminum needs anti-seize, such as exhaust manifold bolts into aluminum heads.

Neat trick, I have my penetrating mix down (acetone, and vegetable oil with heat) , but it would be better not to have to use it in the first place.

Thanks will definetly give it a try
